BOB
URH & THE BARE BONES![]()
Bob plays some mean maracas.
Two songs on this demo from a New York five-piece. The first one, Graveyard
Shift, reminds me of late Rainer Ptacek, its got the same kinda twist to it.
Another name that springs to mind is Howe Gelb. Had he spent his childhood in
a basement instead of a barn he’d probably sound just like Bob Urh. Or
if Lux Interior had spent his formative years in the streets instead of home
watching cartoons The Cramps might sound just like The Bare Bones. Velvet influences?
Sure, but without any of Lou Reed’s arty head-up-his-ass wankdom. I mean,
the man’s made some great music, but at his worst he’s, well, the
worst.
The other piece song on the cd, Bad World Revisited, has more of a bluesy kinda
feeling, mainly thanks to some pretty evil blues harp by Tony Matura. This could
be an old Stones song, though I gotta say that Bob is one evil singer, nothing
like the old businessman Mick. This is more Keith kinda shit here.
Somebody should send a copy of this to Jon Spencer. And Jack White too. And
youbetter believe me here, coz I was already hustlin’ at 53rd and 3rd
with Douglas when your momma was diggin’ the Bay City Rollers.

BOB
URH AND THE BARE BONES "THE HOO DOO GARAGE DEMO!" demo CD, 2005
"The Hoo Doo Garage Demo" CD contains 11 songs by Bob Urh (Ultra 5)
and his pals - The Bare Bones. It's not easy to describe his style, it's some
kind of weird mix between garage punk, americana with some Velvet Underground,
psychobilly, Johnny Thunders, psych spices - psychotic semi acustic desert music.
Songs are recorded low fi, but sound quality is pretty good. Arrangements are
minimal and it fits good with Bob Urh vocal and his songs. The world of Bob
Urh is very strange - something between imagination, dreams and reality. Just
check some titles like "Bad World Revisited", "Cracker Daddies
And Crockadiles", "Red Skin Man Intro" ... If you can imagine
Roky Erickson join Giant Sand with lot of booze and other means, you will know
what I'm talking
about
!!!!!!!!!!

URH & THE BAREBONES – HOODOO GARAGE (CD/GREEN COOKIE) reviewed
by Jurgen Dignef for Goddeau
(translated excerpt) Hoodoo Garage is a record by a extremely talented
singer-songwriter, who presents us with all that’s essential in 50 years
of rock’n’roll history. Urh is a child of rock’n’roll
in all its aspects and ‘Hoodoo Garage’ is the perfect reflection
of such.

BOB URH AND THE BARBONES – HOODOO GARAGE (CD/GREEN COOKIE) reviewed
by Paul van de Gehuchte for Rock Tribune
(translated excerpt) Names that spring to mind while listening to ‘Hoodoo
Garage’ are Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), Lux Interior (The Cramps) and
Jon Spencer. Singer-guitarist Bob Uhr takes no chances while creating the most
authentic sound possible. Beware for the ‘voodoo’ of ‘Hoodoo
Garage’, the perfect soundtrack for an explicit, low-budget, roadmovie.
LOWCUT
Bob Urh and the Bare Bones – Boom Boom a Zoom Zoom/Ramblin Man 7”
2 songs by Bob Urh accompanied by the Bare Bones and it is slow, hypnotic and
minimal and sounds like a strung out version of early Cramps with Junior Kimbrough
sitting in on guitar. H. Williams’ Ramblin Man on the b-side lasts a little
over 5 minutes and really makes the Urh-proach work wonders the way the minor
riff is repeated over and over, backed up by walking bass, lazy drumming, a
lonely tambourine and Mr. Urh’s tortured voice. The information as to
who, what, where, etc. is scarce, since the 7” came in a plain white sleeve,
but the label states ”from the home of psycho sonic sounds galore”…

URH & THE BARE BONES (CD/GREEN COOKIE) reviewed by
Planet Trash (translated excerpt) After hearing ‘Hoodoo
Garage’ by Bob Urh & The Bare Bones I can conclude that at the end
of year I found a serious contender for my list of this year’s releases
that truly turn me on. Hoodoo Garage has a rudimentary sound with minimal arrangements.
Each track seems to be inspired by another classic. From Robert Johnson to The
Velvet Underground and from The Gun Club to The Rolling Stones’ ‘Exile
On Mainstream’. Hoodoo Garage ends abruptly after which I realize that
Bob Urh has made a special record.
BOB URH AND THE BAREBONES – HOODOO GARAGE (CD/GREEN COOKIE) reviewed
by Ewie for FileUnder (translated excerpt)
These Americans, on ‘Hoodoo Garage’, manage to combine the music
of The Rolling Stones and Velvet Underground. This record, full of old fashioned
r&b and garagerock, charmingly rattles like there’s no tomorrow and
the song material is diverse and very good. Basically I hope that both Lou Reed
and Mick Jagger receive a copy of this, so they can get some inspiration for
one last great musical effort.
ULTRA 5 – DENIZENS OF DEMENTIA (CD/GREEN
COOKIE) reviewed by Zeke for
FileUnder (translated excerpt) Among
the most legendary garagebands are
the NYC based Ultra 5. Two weird dudes and two equally remarkable gals
who together produced some magnificent stompers. Since they had their
heyday in the late 80’s, and because their material was hardly available
digitally ‘till recently, the band through the years gained a humongous
cult status. Their most relevant tracks got carefully dusted at last for
the compilation ‘Denizens Of Dementia’. And what joy! With 24 tracks
and
two video’s no bit remained unused, and you get a complete package.
A
real must have for garage and surf fans who also don’t mind a touch of
psychedelia or some freaky shit.

BONES review 2006 UK
Another single worth hunting down is “Ramblin’
Man” / “Boom Boom A Zoom Zoom” by Bob Urh And The Bare
Bones (www.ultraproductions.org ),the a-side is a slow burning garage lament
with suitably primitive production values and vocal so lonesome they’ll
make you reach for the bottle, whilst the flipside ups the pace, full of distorted
slide guitar and tribal stomp backing.
BOB URH AND THE BARE BONES – Boom Boom A Zoom Zoom / Ramblin Man 7”
Ultra Productions, bmi-05, 2005, USA
What a great name for a song: Boom Boom A Zoom Zoom! Bob Urh (Ultra 5 and Zero
Child) is back with a brand new 45 presenting a hypnotic mid tempo bluesy monster
on the a-side and a sick cover of the Hank Williams Ramblin’ Man on b-side.
There is more to come from the home of the psycho sonic, so beware!

THE ULTRA 5 "DENIZENS OF DEMENTIA" CD, Green Cookie Records 2004 "Denizens Of Dementia" is a compilation of rare Ultra 5 tracks from late 80s and early 90s including 1 unreleased song as well as 2 video clips. Ultra 5 are definitelly one of my favorite garage punk bands. I really love their trashy, psychotic and primitive garage punk sound, vox organ with fuzz guitar and cool garage punk image a bit in Cramps style - also 2 girls in the band (organ + bass). 24 tracks and all of them are mindblowing. Few covers like "Off The Hook" (Rolling Stones) or "The Last Ride" (Davie Allan). It's really difficult to pick out favorites here 'cos I will probably write all 24 songs. Anyway, here are some cool titles: "Lady Orange Peel", "Satan's Angel", "Hell", "Psychedelic Soul", "White Trash", ... If you don't have any records of Ultra 5 yet, this CD is a great opportunity to hear this great band with cult status.
